I’m excited to officially share the release of the 2022 LAZ Cabernet Sauvignon—a vintage that marks a significant new chapter for LAZ. After the loss of the 2020 vintage, this release feels especially meaningful, as it also begins my dedicated grower partnership with Sylvan Lake Vineyard, sourcing Cabernet Sauvignon exclusively from this high-elevation site on Howell Mountain.

My winemaker, Celia Welch, and I believe Sylvan Lake is truly special. The 4.5-acre vineyard, planted in 2014, yielded about 2.25 tons per acre in 2022. All fruit was hand-picked, with Celia’s precise harvest decisions to ensure only clusters showing balanced ripeness and acidity made it into the tank. A small addition of Malbec and Merlot rounds out the blend, enhancing depth, structure, and complexity in what we believe is one of our most expressive vintages to date.

A few days ago, on Sunday, I opened a bottle to see how it’s evolved since we bottled it in May 2024. From the first pour, generous aromas of wild brambly fruit—blackberry and raspberry—filled the glass. After a 45-minute decant, the wine deepened in complexity, layering dark fruit with graphite, subtle mountain spice, and a polished finish that reflects its age-worthy style. It reminds me of the 2015 LAZ in both style and structure—and leaves you wanting another glass.

We made just 75 cases and 18- 1.5L magnum bottles of this limited production and I can’t wait for you to experience it.

Thank you!
