It's with great excitement that I offer you the pre-release of my 2015 LAZ Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. When I embarked on this project with one of my favorite winemakers, Celia Welch, I did not really think about how the wine would progress with each new vintage, other than hoping that with each year we would seek to produce a signature style of wine that both represented my "house" palate and Celia's ability to bring that style to the table.
I am thrilled to say that the 2014 was a very good debut vintage and yet, our 2015 vintage of LAZ is outstanding. We shared the 2015 at a few private wine tastings down in Los Angeles two weeks ago and just last week with peers and winemaking friends in Napa Valley. While I frequently explained that this Cabernet is a baby and just developing in the bottle, it showed beautifully in the glass. The potential for this wine is just beginning and I hope you will take part in tasting and seeing where this wine goes for years to come. The 2015 LAZ, in large part because of Mother Nature, is more concentrated and texturally richer than the 2014.
2015 LAZ Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is predominately Cabernet Sauvignon with a touch of Merlot, Malbec, and Cabernet Franc. When Celia and I tasted the final blend together before bottling, we were reminded again how well the supporting Bordeaux varietals lifted the Cabernet Sauvignon in the glass with this specific vintage. The grapes were grown in Rutherford, Spring Mountain, Oakville, and Pritchard Hill areas of Napa Valley. The fruit was carefully hand-harvested, fermented as small lots, barrel aged in French oak (a variety of coopers, 60% new) and bottled on May 9th, 2017 with 180 cases produced.
